French 1874 Model Mle Gras Bayonet

French 1874 Model Mle Gras Bayonet

French M1874 Gras bayonet designed for use with the Mle 1874 Gras rifle, marked and dated 1880 from the St Etienne Armoury. Corrosion and age as shown. Non matching numbers bayonet to scabbard, not uncommon for battlefield captured pieces, which this may be.

The Gras rifle was the infantry rifle of the French army from the 1870s through the early 20th century.

The M1874 Gras bayonet replaced earlier sword-style. The M1874 Gras bayonet remained in use with the French army until the adoption of the Lebel rifle in 1886. However, even after the Mle 1886 Lebel rifle was introduced, many Mle 1874 Gras rifles remained in service, and the bayonet continued to be used until the early 20th century.
