Original WW2 German Kriegsmarine U-Boat Front Clasp, Bronze Grade, by Schwerin
U-Boot-Frontspange in Bronze. Bronzed zinc, laurel wreath, joined together by crossed swords and topped by a Kriegsmarine-style German national eagle clutching swastika, overlaid by a raised U-Boat hollow background, flanked on each side by six oak leaves, the reverse with a barrel hinge and banjo-style pinback meeting a round wire catch, maker marked “SCHWERIN, BERLIN”.
The award was instituted in 1944 to recognize valour. The decoration was awarded based on the recommendations of the U Boat Commander and subject to approval by Admiral Karl Donitz. Awards were commonly given based on the number of patrols completed or obvious demonstrations of bravery in combat. The clasp was worn on the upper left breast of the tunic.
