Another fun and rewarding week on a movie set for some of the Sabre team, serving as film armourers and technical advisors.
We always enjoy working alongside producers, directors, cast and crew to ensure that the use of weapons in storytelling is both safe and technically accurate—while still supporting the creative vision.
This week gave our team the opportunity to contribute to a very cool psychological thriller currently in production.
Whenever we’re on set, our goal is to help keep scenes involving weapons or military themes on track for both safety and realism. Of course, there are times when absolute technical accuracy must be balanced against the needs of the story. Whether it’s fictionalised realism or simply the pursuit of the “rule of cool” in a more stylised action film, creative choices can sometimes take precedence over strict authenticity.
This balance is always carefully navigated in collaboration with writers, producers and directors. Any deviation from accuracy should be deliberate and based on well-informed discussions.
So next time you see something in a film and wonder, "How did the armourers and technical advisors let that happen?"—keep in mind, the team may well have raised it, and the final creative decision rested with the production. In our experience, both sides usually find a compromise that works.
Of course when working as film armourers or advisors on the retelling of an actual historical period in a film, then accuracy will usually take precedence, as it should.
